Has graduated from the I Moscow Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov with a degree in “General Medical Practice”, then the residency at the maternity hospital and the Institute of Emergency Care named after Sklifosovsky.
From 1982 to 1994 has worked at the laboratory of clinical embryology, headed by the Professor Boris Leonov, has implemented the technique of artificial insemination of husband's and donor’s sperm for the treatment of the infertile couples, pioneered the introduction of the IVF method in Russia.
In 1985 one of the first in the country she has implemented the technique of ultrasound monitoring of the growth and maturation of follicles on the background of ovarian hyperstimulation as well as the method of transvaginal puncture of the ovarian follicles under the ultrasound guidance. She has a rationalization proposal to optimize the timing for artificial insemination.
In 1986 Elena Kalinina and Valentin Lukin participated in the conception of the first child in the USSR from the oocytes fertilized outside the mother's body - "in vitro". The supervisors of the program were Professor B.V. Leonov and academician of the RAMS V.I. Kulakov.
In 1989 she has defended her thesis for the Ph.D. Degree on the topic: "The ovarian hyperstimulation in in vitro fertilization”.
In 1993 she was an intern at the clinic Bourn Hall, Cambridge University (England), where in 1978 was born the world's first "test-tube baby".
Since 1994. to 2003 has worked at the family planning clinic of the MMA named after I.M. Sechenov as the head of IVF department.
In 1996 together with a group of co-authors she won the Russian Government Award for the introduction of IVF treatment of the infertile couples into practical public health care.
In 2005 she has founded and headed the reproductive health clinic "ART-IVF" and continues active medical and scientific work.
Using more than two decades of experience in treating the most severe forms of infertility, she has achieved good results at work and was able to organize the work of the clinic on the basis of the highest modern standards.
In 2005 summarizing more than 20 years of experience in the treatment of infertility she defended her thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences on the topic: "Provisions to improve the efficiency of in vitro fertilization treatment of infertility in women with gynaecological diseases”.
In 2008 and 2009 respectively she has become the laureate of the special prize named after B.V. Leonov "Fertility Specialist of the Year" at the National Prize "The Crystal vial”.
In 2010 Elena Kalinina was elected as the President of the ‘Director’s club’ of the private IVF clinics in Russia.
She has more than 50 papers and monographs published. She is actively engaged in scientific and practical activities in the field of modern reproductive technology, is a board member of the Russian Association of Human Reproduction (RAHR) and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE).
In 2004 she headed the organizing committee for the XIV Conference RAHR in Moscow. Regularly participates in the work of Russian and international conferences and congresses.
She is a professor at the Department of “Obstetrics and Gynecology” at the Faculty of Qualification Improvment of the professional health workers in Russian University for Friendship of Nations.
